Welcome new Business Development Coordinator Anna Malmsten and Marketing & Event Coordinator Josefin!

After a long, warm summer it is safe to say that we are more than ready to kick-start this fall with a lot of new events and activities planned. For SACC-GA this means that new trainees are joining the team, and we are happy to welcome Anna Malmsten for the Business Development position and Josefin Edenborg as Marketing & Event position. Read on to get to know more about Anna and Josefin and their thoughts of their upcoming months here in Atlanta!

Anna Malmsten - Business Development Coordinator

What do you look forward the most?
I look forward to experiencing the culture here in the states, both in terms of business culture and outside work and to see how it differs from the Swedish culture. I also look forward to meeting new people and to the networking events.

What will you bring to your position and SACC-GA?

I will bring a positive mindset and a sense for customer service. I have previous been working in retail and banking, both two service industries which gave me an understanding of the importance of the customers need which I think will be a good starting point in my position as Business Development Coordinator.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I hope to broaden my perspectives and gain a better cultural understanding of how the US market differ from the Swedish market. As SACC-GE is a non-profit organization, I also hope to gain a deeper understanding of the structure of a non-profit organization and how it is to work for such an organization.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am originally from outside a small city called Kristianstad in southern Sweden where I grew up and lived my 23 first years. Since then I have lived 6 months in Hong Kong before I moved to Uppsala where I am studying a master’s in Business and Management at Uppsala University. Besides my studies and work I love to travel, meet new people, and to experience new cultures and I believe that there is something to learn from every new meeting. I also try to stay active and I have been competing in both Toughest and Tough Viking which are two obstacle courses in Sweden.

Josefin Edenborg - Marketing & Event Coordinator

What do you look forward the most?

I have always wanted to go to the US and experience the culture and working life here, so choosing one thing is hard. However, I am especially looking forward to all the people I will have the opportunity to meet, both within a business environment but also private. I am also really excited about the events I will get the opportunity to project lead, which I hope people will enjoy and create great memories at.

What will you bring to your position and SACC-GA?

Through my role as president of the Exchange committee at my student association, I gained a lot of experience in terms of project event/marketing planning and problem solving which I believe I can contribute with as well as develop. I also hope that my creativity and enthusiasm within the area can be a valuable addition to the team at SACC-GA.

What do you hope to gain from this experience?

I hope to gain insight in the American business culture and how it differs from Sweden, as well as develop my skills within marketing. As this is a role comes with a lot of responsibility and ownership of your own work, I am also convinced that I will have to challenge myself in many ways which is a valuable experience in itself.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I just graduated from my BSc at Stockholm School of Economics where I spent the last three years. Before that I spent almost as long living in London, initially working as an au pair and after that within retail. I grew up in a small town called Nässjö in Småland where my family still lives and I love to visit. My best friend is my identical twin (!) Isabelle who I don’t just share looks with but also the same bad sense of humour. On my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, as well as travel.

    Ebba Endoff

    Digital Marketer

    gatc LP

Ebba is a Swedish trainee at gatc LP, a corporate member at SACC-GA. She has been with the company since September 2017. The original plan was to stay in Atlanta for a year, but that plan quickly changed into 1.5 years. Ebba is mainly working with gatc’s online marketing and digital presence and is in charge of their social media activities, but also assists with business development and market research.

Why did you choose to do a traineeship in the U.S?
I grew up in the state of Washington and lived there for 7 years so I’ve always felt at home here in the U.S. After attending college in South Carolina as an exchange student for almost a year, I wanted to come back to the South and found this opportunity through SACC and felt like it was meant to be.

What interested you in doing your traineeship with gatc?
My position is oriented towards marketing and business development, and since I have my academic background within marketing management, I wanted to get hands-on experience. It felt like the perfect fit and I also really liked gatc’s business model.

Can you tell us about gatc’s business?
gatc helps foreign companies (mainly from Europe) to establish and expand their business on the U.S market. We have been around in the U.S. for 35 years and have successfully established over 200 companies here.

What are the major challenges for businesses that are entering the U.S. market?
That’s a big question, but off the top of my head I would say that we have seen that people think it’s easier to establish business here than it actually is. The culture differences shouldn’t be underestimated. Perhaps you are familiar with some aspects of American culture through personal experience, but the business culture, banking systems, bureaucracy and business mentality can be quite different. We also see that foreign companies are sometimes not aware of the many state differences.

Have you noticed any cultural differences between doing business in Europe and the U.S?
Yes, I have. Americans don’t have the same distinction between work and free time. Also, the vacation and maternity leave regulations are more generous in Europe. Another thing I have noticed is that the American saying, “good is good enough” is something that many people live by here, making them very efficient. Europeans are often more detail oriented which can be time-consuming. People here are better at small talk and often start their meetings taking some time to talk about something else than business, which is usually not the case in Europe.

As a recent student at a Swedish University, what is your contribution to gatc, a U.S. based company?
We are targeting more Scandinavian based companies now, so my understanding of the Swedish community and how Swedish people prefer to be approached is valuable. Coming here as a student, you have updated knowledge and recent insights in new theories that you are able to apply. I really feel that I get to use my knowledge in digital marketing.

What has been your most valuable experience as a Swedish trainee?
I have really valued the opportunity to get hands-on experience of conducting business in the U.S. My supervisor has given me a lot of freedom to participate in various events, and I’ve also gotten the opportunity to take charge of my own projects. On a personal level, it has definitely been a learning experience to adapt to a new culture. Even though I was here as a student 2016/2017, I am now living here long-term and get to connect with different kinds of people with various backgrounds. The South also taught me that it’s possible to eat chicken and waffles together, haha.
