For over 100 years, The Wesley Company has been a cornerstone in the commercial real estate sector, offering unmatched services and a commitment to community value. From helping clients find the perfect location to offering innovative solutions like third-party logistics and Foreign Trade Zones, The Wesley Company exemplifies dedication to customer service and industry excellence.

What is the focus of your business?

Our company works in commercial real estate as our family has for over 100 years.

What value does this offer to a customer?

We call it a “stake in the community”. A high standard of customer service is essential to protecting our reputation as a company and a family.

    What do your services entail?

We primarily work with businesses to help them find the right facilities for their business real estate needs. This might be an office, a warehouse, a building, or land. We also help owners and companies dispose of or rent their properties.

Where the majority of our activity is in Georgia, we also help our clients with other facilities needs around the US.

Is there any specific area of Atlanta that you focus on?

Not really. Atlanta has many areas that all differ as to their benefits. In order to serve the customer’s needs, we must take all alternative areas into account. We try to help folks define their needs, starting with where they want to live, where their clients are and what is the nature of their interaction, where their employees live, the need for future expansion of both their facilities and employee base and their needs for specific amenities and services.

Is this only sales and leasing? What else does this include?

There have been many changes in recent years in the real estate needs of corporations. We have had customers that ended up electing to work from their homes or from a shared facility, a mailing address, an answering service. If this is what they need, we do not benefit from trying to sell them something that they do not.

The results are very interesting meetings with non-traditional real estate options like 3PL-FTZs that offer third party logistics or fulfillment services as well as Foreign Trade Zones through which an international business might avoid, reduce or defer tariffs on their imported goods.

If their products warrant a foreign trade zone benefit, we can also assist them in their getting this for the facility from which they elect to operate.

Sounds like much more than just real estate.

Yes, a lot of the issues like facility design, building and occupancy permits, and insurance requirements differ in the US from those of other countries. Where we do not discourage hiring legal services when and where necessary, we can also answer or can offer an explanation for many of the questions that arise as a result of these differences or arrange an introduction to someone without needlessly wasting money.

Our activities as a service provider are not driven by immediate economic gratification from the people that we meet and interact with every day.

Business transactions from which we profit are often the culmination of many years of relationship building with a multitude of people.

SACC GA sits down with Alberto Ponce González, a biomedical engineer born in Texas, raised in Mexico, and project manager of the Soft Landings program at Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute. With eight years of experience in business development, Alberto brings a problem-solving mindset to our discussion. As the leader of the Soft Landings program, he delves into the pivotal role its services play in facilitating the smooth entry of foreign companies into the U.S. market. Our conversation explores the Soft Landings program, the challenges it addresses, and the distinctive approach that distinguishes Georgia Tech, offering valuable perspectives for companies worldwide contemplating expansion into the dynamic U.S. business arena.

Why was the Soft Landings program created?

The Soft Landings program was created to assist foreign companies in entering the U.S. market seamlessly. It focuses on three main components: instructional aspects covering industry-specific topics, U.S. business culture, and market research; connecting companies with business leaders and industry experts; and providing access to the essential service providers needed to establish a business.

What are some of the prominent challenges foreign companies face trying to enter the U.S. market?

Foreign companies often face challenges in understanding the U.S. business culture and aligning their products or services to U.S. expectations. It's crucial to conduct thorough market research, customer discovery, and address organizational readiness to make informed decisions about entering the market.

What is the cost for these services?

The Soft Landings program fee is $8,000 per company, which covers the entire seven-week program, including the immersion week. Travel and lodging expenses are not included. Our focus is on providing valuable skills, tools, and resources for companies exploring international expansion.

What type of businesses do you see more frequently coming to request your services? How do they find you/you find them?

We often work with tech, agriculture, health, and various other industries. Companies usually find us through partnerships with chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, or other organizations. They approach us with a group of companies interested in the Soft Landings program.

What sets Georgia Tech apart from others providing similar services?

Georgia Tech's Soft Landings program stands out due to our non-profit university status and emphasis capacity building. We assist companies at the stage where they may not have conducted formal market research, focusing on developing essential skills for international expansion. We are also part of the Enterprise Innovation Institute, which is Georgia Tech’s economic development unit. Being a program of the Enterprise Innovation Institute, the largest and most comprehensive university-based, economic development organization in the U.S., gives Soft Landings clients access to complementary services that address their needs from manufacturing to startup support.

Have you had customers from Sweden?

As of now, I don't have specific information about companies from Sweden participating in the Soft Landings program. While there might have been companies from Northern Europe before my time, our program has engaged with companies from various regions, including Latin America, Eastern Europe, and Asia.

SACC Georgia had the pleasure of interviewing Sandra Carlborg, six-time World Long Drive Champion competing in the World Long Drive Championship in Atlanta in October. Sandra’s mission is not only to grab her 7th championship win but to inspire other women and mothers that they are capable of doing the same. After making a big switch in her career, focusing on her strengths, she pivoted from traditional golf to Long Drive. Sandra uses her experience and transferable expertise from her journey to become a world class athlete in inspirational talks and lectures to business leaders who want their companies and employees to thrive.

Sandra experienced the world through her golf clubs

Sandra is based in Alingsås, on the West coast of Sweden, and has competed in 33 countries and 14 states in the US. She started out her professional golf career in 2004 and after 13 years she transitioned into Long Drive.

“I decided to quit regular golf and focus on what I was excelling in, which was Long Drive”

Sandra tells us she never reached her full potential playing traditional golf, she was really good at hitting the ball far and prior to quitting golf she had even competed in several World Championships in Long Drive just for fun.

After taking a break from competing during the pandemic, and welcoming her first child in 2020 and her second child the following year, in 2023 she decided she was ready to go back to competing. Sandra has made a commitment to be in her best shape ever when she turns 40 in November this year. She aims to inspire women and mothers that it’s possible to bounce back and achieve their goals. Sandra further mentioned that her goal is to win the World Long Drive Championship here in Atlanta between October 18-22.

Long drive - the showman of golf

They call Long Drive the Rock n Roll of golf. It is truly an entertainment sport Sandra explains. Essentially the game is to hit the ball as far as you can and each player receives 6 balls to hit within two and half minutes. Long drive has picked up popularity in recent years and the women’s competitions started airing in 2017. Sandra recently returned to Alingsås from winning gold in the World Long Drive Kingsport championship at Cattails at MeadowView Golf Course in Tennessee. The competition in Tennessee was broadcasted on The Golf Channel and she describes the adrenaline she got from winning as magical.

Going for Gold at World  Long Drive Championship in Atlanta

Between October 18-22, Sandra will be in Atlanta to compete in the World Long Drive Championship at the Bobby Jones golf course in Buckhead. The pressure for this competition is high as Sandra states she has come to win.

“Not only for myself, my motivation that keeps me going is to pave the way. Through dedication and planning you can reach your goals, and that’s what I hope to do in Atlanta”

The pandemic caused the growing sport of Long Drive to stagnate slightly but the upcoming Championship in Atlanta will put it back in the limelight.

Business and Long Drive - the unexpected intersection

Sandra is currently a 6th time world champion, the leading female player in Long Drive in the world. Coming to Atlanta to grab her 7th win, by working steadfastly and staying dedicated to her goals.

“I love my job and I love to entertain - I am doing what I do best and my passion is to share that with others so they can do the same”

When she is not winning championships, she conducts clinics, lectures, golf performances for companies and others. Sandra has worked her way back to the top and is passionate about sharing how. Sandra is available for clinics and lectures while in Atlanta. You can reach Sandra Carlborg through her website.
