Elekta – Pioneer and Partner in Cancer Care
Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, Elekta is a global medical technology company that develops sophisticated tools and treatment planning systems for radiation therapy, radiosurgery and brachytherapy, as well as workflow enhancing software systems across the spectrum of cancer care.
Among its most recognized products are Elekta Synergy®, Elekta Infinity™ and Elekta Axesse™ radiation treatment systems (linear accelerators), Leksell Gamma Knife® radiosurgery system for ultra-precise treatment of intracranial disease targets, MOSAIQ® Oncology Information System (electronic medical records) and Monaco® Treatment Planning System.
Founded in 1972 by the late Lars Leksell, Professor of Neurosurgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, 2012 marks Elekta’s 29th year of operation in the United States, among the first countries into which the company expanded internationally.
“The first person Elekta hired in the United States lived in Atlanta, so that’s where the company decided to launch our U.S. efforts,” says Michelle Joiner, Director of Global Public Relations and Brand Management for Elekta. “Since then, we have worked to reflect the company’s Swedish values of trust, responsibility and a creative spirit – all of which are at the core of the way we conduct business.”
Relationship with SACC
For more than 10 years, the Georgia Chapter of the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce (SACC-GA) has resided within the Elekta’s North America headquarters. A welcome addition to the company’s office space, the SACC-GA staff not only helps facilitate commerce and investment between the State of Georgia and Sweden, they also keep Elekta’s Atlanta office immersed in Swedish culture, introducing employees to everything from traditional Swedish glögg and smördegspaj in December to crayfish and snaps in August.
Most recently, the SACC-GA invited His Excellency Jonas Hafström, Swedish Ambassador to the United States, to speak to Elekta employees on the fruitful partnership between the Swedish and U.S. governments.
When the SACC-GA first moved into Elekta’s Atlanta office, President and CEO Tomas Puusepp was residing in the metro Atlanta area and believed a strategic partnership with the SACC-GA would be an excellent opportunity to collaborate. Since then, Elekta has proudly served as a “Signature Sponsor” of the SACC-GA.
“Business and commerce ties between the United States and Sweden have a long history, and Elekta is grateful to the SACC-GA for their international business partnership,” says Puusepp.
